Basically, Standard Themes are the simplest form without landscape or VGA support,
i.e. they only have QVGA portrait support.
QVGA Themes are themes which include support for both portrait and landscape modes.
They also support both QVGA and Default VGA modes.
Extended Themes have landscape support and also include images for the system monitor indicators in
the today plug-in for Spb Pocket Plus. Extended Themes work for QVGA mode and don't seem to go well
with Default VGA mode.
Then, there are also orientation-aware themes. Such themes display different background images
in different screen orientations. Such themes are not compatible with WM2003 and below.
If your Pocket PC is running on Pocket PC 2002 or Windows Mobile 2003 OS in QVGA mode, you will only need Standard Themes.
Also note that Extended Themes have been found not to work well in Windows Mobile 5.0, so do stay away from those themes if
your device is running on the latest OS.
TSK files are theme files for Windows Mobile Pocket PCs. You need to transfer the .tsk file to your Pocket PC
(either under "\Windows\" or "\My Documents\" in your Pocket PC).
After you have transferred the theme file over to your Pocket PC, go to Start Menu->Settings->Personal tab->Today->Apearance tab and select your new theme from the list.
Simple click on the top right OK button to activate the selected theme. Read this
thread for detailed steps with screenshots.
HME files are theme files for Windows Mobile Smartphones.
You need to transfer the file to your Smartphone and run the hme file from a file explorer.
I did not upload all the themes to Mobile-SG.com. Most of the themes are uploaded to PocketPCThemes.com or SmartphoneThemes.com.
Hence, most of the themes will have the links to the respective download pages at those theme sites. Reference forum thread link
here.
There are many types of Pocket PC Themes. Main categories include PPC2002 themes, WM2003 themes, WM2003SE themes, VGA themes, Extended themes and so on.
Read this
thread for more info.
Extended Themes work well if you have Spb Pocket Plus installed. These themes contain extra settings used by Pocket Plus.
They include today plug-in icons and also the taskbar battery status display. Read this
thread for more info.
Basically, WM2003SE Themes include landscape support. Just like WM2003 Themes, it also includes the start menu text color setting, which is not found in PPC2002 Themes.
Read this
thread for more info.
I recommend that you use WM2003SE Themes when using the Pocket PC in QVGA landscape mode. Extended Themes also work well in this mode.
If you are using your Pocket PC in 640x480 screen resolution, then you should be using VGA Theme or VGA Extended Theme.
That is because you are using a PPC2002 Theme on a WM2003/WM2003SE Pocket PC. You can use registry hacks to set the font color.
You can also download or create WM2003 Themes which have custom colors information for the Start Menu Text. Read this
thread to get more detailed help.
Just like the start menu text color, you can also achieve the results by using registry hacks or by creating themes which contain this information.
However, none of the theme generators out there has a function to set this color information. I have provided detailed steps on how to resolve this issue in this
thread.
Yes, there is a way to create WM2003 Themes only by using freewares. But the process is slightly more complicated and troublesome.
Basically I would recommend you to have both Microsoft Theme Generator and Spb Extended Themes Generator installed on your PC.
To find out the detailed steps on how to create such themes, check out this
thread.
I've compiled the links over at this
thread.
The links can also be found on the right side of this page.
The list of recommended Theme Generators for both Pocket PC and Smarphones can be found in this
thread.
I would recommend using a Theme Manager software for your Pocket PC.
When you use such softwares, you no longer need to place your theme files in the "default" folders.
You can place them anywhere you want and choose the theme to apply using the Theme Manager.
Theme Managers also allow you to preview the themes. There are also some theme managers which are required to use certain themes, e.g. Flash Themes.
Check out this
thread for a nice list of recommended Theme Managers for the Pocket PC.
